Demand Rejected
AI company Anthropic rejected the Pentagon’s demand to accept new terms in order to continue working with the US military.
Context
Anthropic signed a $200M contract with the Pentagon last year and is the only AI lab whose models have been cleared for classified military work. The company has insisted on specific guardrails for military use of its technology, including prohibitions on mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth spoke with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei at the Pentagon on Tuesday and gave him until Friday to accept new terms for using Anthropic’s Claude AI chatbot without company restrictions.
Amodei Rejects Terms
On Thursday, Amodei rejected the demands, saying that the new terms failed to preserve the company’s key safeguards.
