Proposed Settlement
German biotech company Bayer proposed paying up to $7.25B to resolve tens of thousands of lawsuits that claim its Roundup weedkiller caused cancer.
Context
Bayer acquired Monsanto, the maker of Roundup, in 2018 and took on Monsanto’s legal liabilities. Plaintiffs argued that they developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma and other cancers from using the weedkiller. Bayer previously paid around $10B in 2020 to settle most pending Roundup cases, but that deal failed to cover future lawsuits. The company still faces approximately 65,000 active claims.
Settlement Details
On Tuesday, Bayer filed the proposed settlement in a Missouri state court, creating a claims program that would be funded through payments spanning up to 21 years.
