New Study
Scientists discovered that Greenland sharks maintain functional vision for centuries, a finding that could lead to treatments for age-related blindness in humans.
Context
Greenland sharks live up to 400 years in the deep, cold waters of the Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans. Researchers previously believed the sharks had poor vision due to parasites that attach to their eyes and because they live in near-total darkness up to 10,000 feet underwater.
Study Details
This month, researchers from the University of Basel in Switzerland, the University of California, Irvine, and the University of Copenhagen published a study in Nature Communications showing that Greenland sharks retain their ability to see for their entire lives.
