Killings Stop?
Trump told reporters that Iran stopped killing protesters, while the US evacuated personnel from a base in Qatar for safety reasons.
Context
Some rights groups estimate that close to 3,000 people have died in Iran since the government crackdown began. Iran was expected to execute a protester – Erfan Soltani, 26 – on Wednesday, not even a week after his initial detention, according to Soltani’s family and human rights group Hengaw. On Tuesday, Trump promised “very strong action” against Iran if authorities executed protesters.
No More Killings?
Trump told reporters at the White House on Wednesday that he had been informed “on good authority” that Iran had stopped killing protesters and canceled plans for an execution.
