Protests
President Trump vowed to “rescue” protesters in Iran as the country faces its largest anti-government protests since 2022.
Context
Iran periodically faces anti-regime protests, which the government typically reacts to with killings, torture, and arrests.
The last major protests took place in the Fall of 2022, after a woman was killed during an arrest for improperly wearing a headscarf, and resulted in 551+ deaths, 7+ executions, and 20,000 arrests.
New Protests
A new round of protests has been going on since last weekend, driven by a drop in the value of Iran’s currency, the rial. It has now lost 60% of its value since the June war with Israel and the US, dropping to a record-low exchange rate of 1,445,000 to the dollar. The devalued rial is fueling runaway inflation, harming consumers, while making it impossible for businesses to make a profit.
