Protests Grow
Protests in Iran intensified over the weekend, as the death toll rose and authorities cut off the internet.
Context
Demonstrations in Iran began on December 28 when merchants began protesting rampant inflation and economic decline. Ensuing anti-government protests have become the biggest since at least 2009, and perhaps the greatest threat to the Islamic Republic regime since 1979.
Protesters have been calling for the regime’s fall and chanting for the return of the Shah, the pre-revolution king.
