Potential Shutdown?
Senate Democrats threatened to block a government funding package, raising the prospect of a partial shutdown.
Context
Congress needs to pass six remaining spending bills by Friday to keep multiple federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), funded through September. The House already approved the bills and sent them to the Senate in a single package that requires 60 Senate votes to pass, but Republicans only hold 53 Senate seats.
Democratic Opposition
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) announced on Saturday that Democrats would not vote to advance the funding package if it included DHS appropriations. ICE is a division of DHS.
