Crossing Reopens
The Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt reopened after being mostly closed for almost two years.
Context
Israeli forces took control of the Rafah crossing in May 2024. The border had been Gaza’s main gateway to the outside world and an exit point for Palestinians. The crossing has remained largely closed since Israel’s takeover, though it was briefly reopened in January 2025 during a temporary ceasefire before resumed fighting in March forced it to close again.
Reopening Details
The reopening marked the last major requirement in the first phase of a US-brokered ceasefire that took effect in October. Israel had delayed opening the crossing until the remains of the final hostage held in Gaza were returned last week.
