Beijing Meeting
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
Context
Relations between Britain and China had been strained over espionage allegations, Beijing’s support for Russia, and its crackdown on human rights in Hong Kong. Tensions with the US over Trump’s tariffs and recent push to acquire greenland have prompted Western leaders to seek closer ties with China as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and several European leaders visited Beijing in recent weeks.
Meeting Details
On Thursday, Starmer met with Xi to discuss trade, security, and economic cooperation between their two countries. Starmer brought over 50 British business executives to China as part of his delegation, though they did not participate in the meeting with Xi.
