Noem Fired
President Trump removed Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security on Thursday.
Context
Noem had led the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for over a year, during which she became a prominent face of the administration’s immigration enforcement efforts. The department reported a drop in illegal border crossings under her tenure, though Noem faced scrutiny for her handling of a federal immigration surge in Minnesota, in which officers killed two US citizens.
Change Details
Trump announced the change on social media on Thursday and said he would replace her with Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), who still requires Senate confirmation.
