It's sad to see how progressives are often just the same as MAGA when it comes to a threat to one of their own. It's always a conspiracy of some other group trying to make things up and ruin their campaign because it's a threat. This guy has a known history for drunkenness, PTSD, and violent words and behavior, so it's not at all surprising something like this happened. The question I would ask progressives is it excusable only when it's "your guy" and not the other side's? Just be consistent. If you find it excusable or not, either way is fine - that's your own personal opinion and view of how things should work, just be consistent about that view. If you're not consistent, that that view is just partisan posturing and you've been captured by an ideology and willing to excuse anything as long as it suits your political side.

As people we need to own our shortcomings and be humble and show we are capable of change, that is a worthwhile role model in my books.
