You should have stopped in Springfield, Missouri the birthplace of Route 66. Many festivities have been going on for the centennial! We live just south of there on Table Rock Lake.
You mentioned Grapes of Wrath. Steinbeck also wrote Travels With Charlie, which I believe is a bit more contemporary and has a more sociological bent to it.
My grandfather and grandmother had a home/property on Route 66 and Route 83 (Kingery Hwy) in Illinois when I was a child. He sold the property around 1958/59. It's now taken up by I-55, on/off ramps and 4 lanes of traffic. Route 83 was only 2 lanes then but is now 4 lanes, and Route 66 was 2 lanes but now is 4 lanes and renamed I-55. I sure do miss the way things were then...
I'm from Southern California and have fond memories of roadtrips to the West of us and to the East Coast. I love driving through the small towns and get excited when I realize we are on Route 66.
